  • You can purchase up to 10 passes per single transaction, allowing families or groups to ride together where bike availability permits.
  • If you require more than 10 passes, just re-visit the 'Buy a Pass' page to make another purchase.
  • There are two likely reasons none of the many bikes you can see are available.
    1. The bikes are already rented by an existing user, and have been parked in the port so as to obey municipal bicycle parking regulations.
    2. Our bikes are sourced from DoCoMo, one of Japan's largest telco's. They have a domestic subscription model that allows users to pre-book a bike for 20 minutes prior to picking up.
  • Therefore, you have three options when unable to find a bike available:
    1. Use our Pre-booked bike service, which guarantees you a bike.
    2. Wait 15~20 minutes to see if one or more of the bikes becomes available.
    3. Find another (quieter) bike port nearby.

    1. Lock the bike with the sliding wheel lock.
    2. Press "Enter" key to return the bike.
    3. Check your bike status as "Returned" on the 'Return Bike' menu
    4. Use the JapanTravel.Bike app to request a new bike*.
    5. *Please remember your One Day Pass will only allow you to unlock a new bike once you have successfully returned the one you are using.

    6. *Only one bike at a time can be used per individual bike pass, but the bike can be switched an unlimited amount of times throughout the day.

  • If you having mechanical problems, use our chat function to contact us, or you can ask for the bike to be "Returned" as is (i.e. without having to park at a registered bike port) by calling our bike supplier, DBS Co., directly at 0120-116-819 (English supported).​ Once the bike is returned, you will be able to transfer your pass to another bike.
  • To keep registering for www.japantravel.bike quick and simple, we only have your email address as a contact. That means if you are having problems returning your bike, or some other problem, the only way we can contact you is by email. It is, therefore, your responsibility to check your email regularly during the rental, especially in the evening if you are making a late return. You can contact us either by email or by Chat, which is on the Support menu, on our web app at www.japantravel.bike.
  • On the day you are using your bike, no doubt you will be needing to park it temporarily to buy snacks, use the bathroom, visit museums, etc. Generally, public facilities (other than toilets) offer bicycle parking at the entrance area. Just look for the signs. Otherwise:
  • If you are in a congested area, look for a public bicycle parking area near the station. Usually these have temporary parking spaces for 100 yen or so per day.
  • Look for a nearby temple or convenience store and park in front.
  • If there are no other options, then you may be forced to park in an unpermitted area. We don't recommend this and there is a possibility that the local parking police will remove your bike. If this happens, your pass will be considered terminated and there may be an additional penalty if we incur charges in retrieving the bike. In any case, here are some tips to reduce the likelihood of this happening.
  • * If there is no alternative, find a side road away from the main foot traffic, and park against guard rails or beside trees, etc., where it is unlikely anyone will bump into your bike. Do not park on driveways or in front of doorways.

    * Check your bike regularly so that you have time to move it if the parking police don't like where it is.

    * Some cities are more strict about where you park your share bike than others. For example, downtown Osaka (Dotonbori) is strict. Shibuya, Tokyo, not so much.

  • Where you shouldn't temporarily park your bike is at a share bike port, as it is possible someone will try to return your bike in order to use it with a new pass. If you find yourself parking near a bike port, position your bike more than 10m away, so that it is not detected by the port's WiFi.
  • If you have parked your bike somewhere, then returned only to find it's gone, then one of the following things may have happened.
  • You may simply be on the wrong street. Double-check your location.
  • You may have forgotten to lock your bike, and another user, thinking the bike is vacant, swiped their card on the ID panel without paying attention and ridden off on it. ALWAYS LOCK YOUR BIKE. This is your responsibility, just as if it was your own bike.
  • You may have locked your bike but parked it temporarily in a bike port. Please don't do this. Placing the bikes at a port can means someone else could try returning it then using it on a fresh pass. Instead, if you are parking temporarily, make sure you are at least 10 meters away from the nearest bike port.
  • You parked somewhere in the way of foot traffic and a local shop keeper has moved the bike. Please look around the area to see if the bike is parked somewhere less obtrusive.
  • You parked somewhere with heavy foot traffic in a downtown area and the parking police removed your bike. In this case, there is nothing we can do to assist you, and the pass will be considered terminated.
  • The least likely thing to have happened is that someone willfully stole your bike. Our bikes are very distinctive and basically useless without IoT connectivity, To date, we have never had a bike stolen.

Penalties

  • If you do not return the bike by the expiry time/date of your Day Pass, you will be charged at least one additional day of rental fee.
  • If you do not return the bike by the expiry time/date, and we cannot contact you by email the following day, you may be charged additional day(s) of rental fee.
  • If the bike is placed at a port but not locked/returned properly and someone else steals it, you may be liable for a bike search/return fee of JPY20,000 plus transport costs.
  • If the bike is stolen or damaged due to an act of negligence (such as not locking/returning the bike properly) or wilful misconduct, you may be liable for the repair/replacement cost of the bike.
  • If you park the bike in an illegal location leading to it being towed, you will be liable to pay a fine of JPY 10,000. Please make sure you are parking legally when finding a place to park your bike(s) at your hotel or other location.

Service Claims and Refunds

  • Bicycles not working, after payment and following interaction with our support team
    1. No inventory within 1km of originally visited bike port
    2. Japantravel.bike system malfunction
    3. Earthquake or similar natural calamity
  • Mistaken over-order of bicycle quantity and where you have used the over-ordered passes
  • Changed plans and other personal situations
  • Dissatisfaction due to heavy traffic, bike functionality other than malfunctions, or bike availability (and similar situations)
  • Sickness, accidents, etc. (these should be covered by your insurance)
  • Where a problem occurs that may or may not be your fault, but where your support request to our team occurs after 20:00 and you do not give us sufficient time to respond (after 20:00 each day you must give us up to 1 hour for chat and 3 hours by email to respond) before your credit card is charged at midnight for the following day's bike usage.
  • At no time will Japan Travel KK or its agents be responsible for injury, damage, loss, or death occurring to yourself or third parties, regardless of the circumstances, if caused by but not limited to your unintentional mis-use, negligence, malicious act, action by the police or other local authorities, civil disturbance, Act of God, or your lack of knowledge how to use the service and equipment properly.
